Manchester United chief Ed Woodward is believed to have spoken with a number of ex-players about a technical role back at the club, because the other former stars have done so “well” since making their return to Old Trafford (as Gary Neville has pointed out), though was surprisingly reluctant to commit himself to the idea of appointing a ‘Head of Football’ during the latest investors’ call.

"Regarding the speculation around the Head of Football, we are continually reviewing and looking at the potential to evolve our structure on the football side," said Woodward.

"Much of the speculation around this type of role revolves around recruitment – an area that we’ve evolved in recent years. As we’ve already mentioned, we feel the players we’ve signed in the summer demonstrate this approach is the right one."
