The Premier League champions are concerned over the long-term fitness of club captain Nemanja Vidic.
David Moyes will make a move to sign Garay, after Vidic was ruled out of the club’s pre-season tour of Asia with a back problem. Although the Serbian international is set to recover soon, his repeated injury concerns has led to Moyes interested in bringing in a new centre-back.
That man could be Garay, if Benfica accept United’s initial offer of £15million. But long-term admirers of the Argentine, the club are likely to make an improved bid should Benfica reject their first offer. United could even offer Nani or Bebe as part of the deal, to match Benfica’s £25million valuation.
The 26-year-old is reportedly interested in a move to the Premier League, and will be hoping that the two sides can reach an agreement.
Garay would have to fight Ferdinand, Vidic, Evans, Jones and Smalling for a place in the starting line-up at Old Trafford.
Moyes will be hoping to have his defence sorted ahead of the club’s opening match of the new season, where United travel to Swansea, on August 17th.
Would Garay be a good signing? Should Moyes have faith in Vidic’s fitness?
