According to Diario Gol, Real Madrid will sell Raphaël Varane to Manchester United this summer if they meet the asking price of £54million.

What's the story?

Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez is apparently open to the idea of selling Varane and will look to use the funds to rebuild their own defence, with Marquinhos, Leonardo Bonucci and David Alaba all lined up as summer targets for Madrid.

According to the report, Mourinho has successfully convinced Varane to join. The ex-Madrid boss was the one who signed the young Frenchman from Lens back in 2011.

The history between Real Madrid and Manchester United involving David De Gea could be a potential stumbling block, but the Spanish club could even try and use Varane as a bargaining chip in their long-standing pursuit of De Gea.

Would he be a good fit?

Varane, valued at £36million by Transfermarkt, has made 19 league starts for the Spanish giants this season but could find his chances limited if they do reinvest in the defence this summer.

Manchester United will be looking to splash the cash this summer as they try to contend with Manchester City, and would certainly not want to lose De Gea without getting something considerable in return. If the 24-year-old defender is truly Mourinho’s first choice, he is a good one, and would be an immediate upgrade to United’s starting XI.

Varane is excellent in the air, something that will appeal to Mourinho, and has the ball playing abilities to succeed in a team that often dominates possession. With Chris Smalling, Victor Lindelof and Phil Jones all showing their inconsistencies this season, Varane would be the perfect long-term partner for Eric Bailly.
