The United faithful temporarily put down their pitchforks and extinguished their torches following a long and tiresome summer of Woodward bashing and returned to their holy place on Sunday – Old Trafford.
The game could’ve gone either way on paper. The summer period may have provided some much-needed respite for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men, in the wake of a truly dismal end to the previous campaign, but it takes more than a couple of comprehensive wins against Perth Glory and Leeds United to obliterate any memory of two wins in 12 games.
Meanwhile, off the back of their Europa League victory, and despite the return of the prodigal son and Stamford Bridge favourite ‘Super Frankie Lampard,’ Chelsea faced some very real problems of their own.
It was the home fans that left the happier of the two, however. A masterclass in counter-attacking football plucked straight from the Sir Alex Ferguson handbook saw United steal away with four goals and three points in the bag against a wasteful Blues side, whose frequent but futile attacks were ultimately about as a effective as a guard dog with a gum shield in.
Goal scorer Anthony Martial, who recently reclaimed his no.9 shirt from the departed Romelu Lukaku, took to Instagram following the match to give props to his teammates, and Andreas Pereira responded accordingly…
