The Belgian international was the Red Devils’ only signing of the last transfer window, arriving at Old Trafford from Everton in a £27.5m deadline day deal.
Some have suggested that he may not have the ability to perform at the very highest level, despite him having been impressive under David Moyes while the pair were on Merseyside.
However, Carrick praised his new team-mate, describing him as a “dominant” presence in the midfield:
“He is a real presence in there. He is such a dominant player and gives us something that we haven’t had,” he told the Daily Star.
“You want options in the squad. There’s no point in having similar players.”
Fellaini and Carrick are in direct competition for a spot in Moyes’ starting XI, with both players preferring to play from a deeper midfield role.
The England international has previously claimed that he does not feel threated by the new arrival, and feels that they can form an effective partnership when playing together.
Fellaini made his Champions league debut for United on Tuesday, helping them secure a 4-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen.
Will Marouane Fellaini be a hit at Old Trafford?
