Manchester United still in race for Dortmund defender

Mats HummelsManchester United are hopeful of concluding a summer deal for Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels, according to reports from The Express.

The Premier League leaders have been interested in the German international for some time, and were even linked with a move for his signature last summer.

But, recent reports have suggested that he is Barcelona’s top transfer target, and that negotiations between the player and the club are at an advanced stage.

But, Hummels has denied these claims, stating that there is not sort of agreement in place.

He did go on to suggest that he would consider a move to one of Europe’s elite clubs as he is an “ambitious thoroughbred footballer.”

These admissions have re-opened the door for United, who could rival Barca in the race for the 24-year-old.

Sir Alex Ferguson is believed to be keen on drafting in defensive players this summer, after having to use midfielder Michael Carrick as an emergency centre-half earlier in the season due to injuries.

The Scot would be hopeful that Hummels could form a string partnership with Nemanja Vidic in the short-term and eventually succeed the Serbian at old Trafford.

Local rivals Manchester City are also interested, and could trigger a bidding war for the defender.
