Manchester United still keen on Spanish star

The list of possible replacements is getting thinner by the day

Manchester United are still intent on pursuing  Cesc Fabregas, despite claims from Barcelona that they had dropped their interest in the player, reports the BBC.

The Premier League champions have made no secret of their desire to bring the former Arsenal captain to Old Trafford, so far seeing two bids rejected by the Catalan giants.

Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta told a Spanish newspaper United have “renounced his signing”, although sources close to the club expect Moyes to return with a third record-breaking bid.

Any offer over £30.75million would see United break their transfer record, and could potentially represent Moyes’ first marquee signing since becoming Red Devils manager.

The Scot has grown frustrated with his failure to bring in any big names this summer, and is desperate for the Fabregas deal to come off, with the start of the new Premier League season under two weeks away.

However Barcelona have remained firm on the issue, and continue to deny Fabregas is set for a move away.

Zubizarreta spoke during the club’s pre-season tour on the issue, saying: “Manchester United are interested in the player, but it’s also true that they understand our position of not wanting to sell.

“They have renounced his signing. We aren’t going to sell him.

“He has a contract with us. We count on Cesc.

“He’s an extraordinary player who creates and finishes chances. We are delighted with him. He’s the number four of Barca.”
