Manchester United superstar edging towards exit

Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)Manchester United are at risk of losing Wayne Rooney for a knockdown fee after it emerged that contract negotiations are yet to have begun, according to reports from the Daily Mail.

The England international was heavily linked with a move away from the Premier League champions over the summer, with Chelsea and Arsenal thought to have been keen.

Rooney was said to have grown frustrated by his diluted first-team role under previous boss Sir Alex Ferguson and that contract negotiations hadn’t begun despite him being just two years from the end of his deal.

Eventually the club persuaded him to stay put, and David Moyes has welcomed him into his starting XI.

But, discussions surrounding a new deal have not been forthcoming, resulting in rumours that he may be allowed to leave at a reduced rate either in January or at the end of the season.

Rooney currently earns £220,000-per-week, a figure that United are thought to be keen to reduce, or at least maintain.

If an extension cannot be agreed, the Red Devils may look to sell while they can still recoup a respectable fee.

Chelsea saw numerous bids of above £20m for ‘Wazza’ rejected over the summer, but may return with a new offer with Jose Mourinho still keen on the bustling forward.

Arsenal are also believed to still be interested.
