The Red Devils are widely expected to dip into the January transfer market after a woeful summer of activity, with strengthening his squad a priority for David Moyes.
However, as well as experienced campaigners, the Scot is also keen to snap up talented youngsters.
Goncalves has caught his eye following a series of impressive displays and is supposedly being monitored by a number of top European clubs.
The 18-year-old currently plies his trade for Basel’s U-21 side, but is being tipped to be a future star.
United have a history of developing young players, and Moyes is keen to keep that going with Goncalves.
The club’s most recent graduate has been Adnan Januzaj, and the former Everton boss says that he is committed to helping fresh talent succeed.
“Young footballers get opportunities to progress here at Manchester United and I have no doubt that, in the future, Adnan will become a top player. He is 18 years old, has good ability, plus maturity beyond his years,” Moyes said.
“All aspects of his game will continue to improve the more he plays matches but already he has made important contributions to the team through both making and scoring goals.”
Should David Moyes be looking at experienced players rather than youngsters?
