Manchester United targeting forgotten Premier League legend in January

Manchester United could offer Ashley Cole a sensational return to the Premier League, according to the Daily Express.

The AS Roma defender has had a torrid time of it since joining the Serie A giants, having been left out both their domestic and Champions League squad lists.

The former England star is understood to be one of the candidates Red Devils chief Louis van Gaal has identified as a potential replacement for Luke Shaw.

Cole would presumably represent a relatively cheap option, due to his situation in the Italian capital, and brings a wealth of experience.

He won three Premier League titles across a glittering career with Arsenal and Chelsea, as well as seven FA Cups and the Champions League.

The 34-year old is thought to have been seriously considered as the Red Devils scramble for short term defensive reinforcements.

Shaw was ruled out for around six months in September after suffering a horrific double fracture in his leg, while Marcos Rojo has been repeatedly linked with a move away from Old Trafford.
