Football writer Rafael Hernandez believes the recent departure of David Villa to Atletico Madrid could lead Barcelona president Sandro Rosell to offer Thiago more money to stay at the Nou Camp.
And according to reports, it would match what the Premier League Champions would pay the Spain Under-21 captain.
However, Thiago’s move to Old Trafford still seems highly likely, with the two clubs set to meet this week to finalise a £17million deal for the player and become David Moyes’ first major signing as Manchester United manager.
The playmaker seems keen on a move away from the Catalan giants to maximise his chances of breaking into Spain’s World Cup squad next year.
Cesc Fabregas, Xavi and Andres Iniesta are all ahead of Thiago in the midfield pecking order.
The club also removed the player from the club’s original kit promotional photo for the upcoming season – another strong indication that he is set to leave for Manchester.
But the player is still set to join up with his Barcelona team mates for pre-season training next Monday, leaving his future in the balance.
Moyes is doubtful that he will be able to complete any signings before United head off for their pre-season tour of Asia.
