Manchester United are among a host of clubs that had scouts watch Genoa defender Mario Sampirisi against AC Milan on Saturday.
Premier League rivals Chelsea and Liverpool also had representatives present to watch the 19-year-old full back following performances which have drawn attention from all over Europe.
The youngster has come through the Milan youth academy as a wing back but has found a more suitable position sweeping up opposition attacks for Genoa. Sampirisi was unable to make an appearance for Milan and made his Serie A debut in January in Genoa’s clash with Palermo. Sampirisi joined Genoa in a swap deal which saw Portuguese midfielder Pele head to the San Siro.
He has become a regular fixture in the Genoa side since making his debut in January and has now gone on to become a star in the under-21 setup.
Already at his young age there are reports linking him with a call up to Cesare Prandelli’s 2014 World Cup squad.
Talking about the prospect, the young defender told Italian press, “To play for Genoa is the first dream to come true. To play in the World Cup? Maybe one day.”
Italian journalist Gianluca DiMarzio who works for Sky Sports News said of the promising young Italian: “Mario Sampirisi continues to amaze and attract the attention of the big European Clubs.
“The 19-year-old full back is monitored by Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool whose scouts have been to watch the player recently.”
In total Sampirisi has only played ten times for Genoa since his 1million Euro move from Milan but has already represented Italy at under-19 and under-21 level.
