Speaking on ESPN FC, former West Ham goalkeeper Shaka Hislop has urged Manchester United to make a move for Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho this summer.

What did he say?

Coutinho has been the subject of intense transfer speculation in recent weeks and months after a rather underwhelming time in Spain with Barcelona.

Hislop has now suggested that whilst the more logical fit for Coutinho would be to go back to Liverpool, United's more "urgent need" should see the Red Devils try and sign him this summer.

He said: "The easiest fit maybe would be for a Liverpool, give how successful he was (there before). Maybe there’s a more urgent need for Manchester United, who do have a lot of money, given their own brand and their own commercial machine.

"Given the fact that they’ve certainly under-delivered over the last couple of seasons, maybe you need that big-name player to come in. I think Manchester United more than any need that impact from a midfielder. But, would Coutinho go to Old Trafford without Champions League football being in the offing? That’s a question for him and his representatives.

"Personally, if I were advising him, I would say ‘yes, you’ve got to take that chance’. But then of course there’s the relationship between Manchester United and Liverpool and all that comes into play."

The right fit?

Whilst a move for Coutinho would certainly generate headlines, is he the type of player that United desperately need to invest in this summer? There are certainly no arguments that the Brazil international possesses an abundance of talent, but the Red Devils perhaps have more pressing concerns elsewhere.

Their pursuits of Leicester defender Harry Maguire and Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff suggests that United are keen on trying to sign players who could help create the foundation of the side; not the icing on the cake so to speak. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side also have numerous talents coming through their academy side like Tahith Chong, Mason Greenwood and Angel Gomes, amongst others, who may feel aggrieved at a move for Coutinho.

So whilst it could be a blockbuster move, United simply have other fish to fry when it comes to their summer business.
