Red Devils chief David Moyes has made the Spanish U-21 star one of his top transfer targets, and has been buoyed by news that his release clause has fallen to just £15.4million after he failed to make the required number of first-team appearances at the Nou Camp last season.
With the fee much lower than originally expected, United are willing to offer Thiago a big money contract to keep interest from other clubs at bay.
Reports suggest that Moyes will triple the 22-year-old’s current salary and offer him regular game time.
This may appeal to the youngster, who finds himself behind the likes of Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas, while earning far less than his team-mates.
Barca don’t want him to leave, but are resigned to the fact that they now have very little power over the situation.
Thiago is believed to be one of the Catalans’ top prospects, and a player that has been heralded as somebody who could be key in future years.
United have been keen for some time, but may have to battle off interest from Premier League rivals Chelsea and Champions League winners Bayern Munich.
