Manchester United launched a fruitless deadline day swap deal for Andros Townsend, according to reports from The Mirror.
United were buoyed by Spurs’ rumoured interest in taking the Portuguese wide-man on loan, and attempted to use this to push trough a shock deal for Townsend – who has been earning rave reviews for his displays this season.
However, Tottenham were not willing to entertain the idea of letting their star leave, especially with a push for Champions League qualification – in which they are in competition with the Red Devils – the priority over the remainder o the season.
David Moyes may return with a summer raid for the talented winger, but his plans may hinge on Townsend’s World Cup performances.
United’s only piece of January business was the club record move for Juan Mata.
Moyes was linked with the likes of Toni Kroos, Marco Reus and Diego Costa, and could return for them once the transfer window re-opens.
