Despite spending over £150m during the summer, Jose Mourinho’s best performer has been a man he already had in his Manchester United squad, and one many predicted may have found his way out before the last deadline.
Juan Mata, the man sold by Mourinho to the Red Devils at Chelsea, has proved to be United’s star-man this season, performing considerably more effectively than the world’s most expensive hair model, Paul Pogba.
Last night’s win over Manchester City in the EFL Cup was vital for Mourinho following an abysmal 4-0 defeat to Chelsea on the weekend, and the result showed that Mata, who scored the only goal, is crucial to the Red Devils this season.

Mata has started just six games for United this season but United have lost none of those, only conceding three in the process and averaging two goals-a-game.
Now in a crucial stage of the season, it’s time Mourinho is harsh on his squad and drops the underperforming men to instead go with players like Mata, who have been statistically solid this season.
