Manchester United are interested in signing Mauro Icardi from Inter Milan, potentially as part of a deal involving Romelu Lukaku, according to The Express.

What's the story?

The paper say that Lukaku is one of Inter's big transfer targets this summer and that Manchester United are now interested in Icardi as a replacement, with the duo potentially switching as part of the same deal.

Player exchanges at that elite level are rare but if there's a desire from both parties, as the report states, then it could prove to be one of the most high-profile deals of the transfer window.

How would Icardi fit in at Old Trafford?

Marcus Rashford has been a go-to pick for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the striking position at the club over the last six months, but Lukaku's presence would need replacing if he leaves. He did, after all, finish last season with 12 goals to his name.

If United can leverage the Belgian's exit to pick up an experienced goalscorer in the process it's a move that makes sense.

Icardi does have the kind of scoring pedigree that suggests he can be a success in the Premier League, having netted 124 goals in 219 appearances since joining the Serie A outfit.

That doesn't guarantee goals in Manchester of course but demonstrates he has the potential to find the net on a regular basis. He's scored 15 or more goals in each of his last five seasons.

With United needing more firepower in their team, having scored less goals than all but one of the top six teams in the Premier League last season, that kind of contribution could go down a treat at Old Trafford and help the club move on from the short-lived Lukaku era.
