It hasn't quite been the blistering season Manchester United fans would have hoped to witness under the guidance of Jose Mourinho but the Red Devils are starting to find their feet under the Portuguese boss, propelling themselves back into the race for a top-four finish after beating Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.

Mourinho's entire squad will be crucial for his charge and one player in particular will be hoping to become more of a regular fixture within the Manchester United team, as Phil Jones has made just 44 appearances in the past three seasons.

Injury problems have payed their part in the 24-year-old's struggles but Jones seems to have turned a corner in the past month, playing the entirety of Manchester United's last five Premier League matches.

Mourinho has been impressed with what he has seen from the former Blackburn man and believes he could now stake a claim to reclaim his spot within the England squad, as The Daily Express quotes him as stating.

“Jones is fast. John is amazing in the air. They are not players to compare. It is not even fair to compare a player with such a career like John with such a young guy like Phil who has been punished by so many injuries over the last couple of years."

“I prefer to say Jones is doing this season much better this season than in the last two and he is giving hope to everyone that he can be back to normality and, who knows, be back to the national team, be a firm choice at Manchester United because he is doing very well.”

Having last appeared for England over a year ago, Jones faces a stern test between now and February to force his way into contention but the new guidance of Gareth Southgate with the Three Lions could hand him his chance.
