The Daily Mirror has reported that Manchester United will offer Anthony Martial to Chelsea in return for Jose Mourinho’s top summer target Willian.
According to The Mirror, both clubs value their respective wingers at £75m and both players are looking for a move away from their clubs, leading United to suggest a deal similar to the one that saw them take Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in return for Henrikh Mkhitaryan in January.
Both players have also been criticised by their respective managers this summer, with Jose Mourinho fining Anthony Martial for leaving United’s preseason tour to witness the birth of his baby and Willian angering new boss Maurizio Sarri by returning late to Chelsea’s preseason training.
The Mirror also claims that Barcelona are in the race for Willian’s signature after the Brazillian netted 13 goals and provided 12 assists despite falling out of favour at Stamford Bridge last season.
However, considering Martial is just 22-years-old and has huge potential, whereas Willian is 29 and could well be coming to the end of the peak of his career, this deal could prove to be a Mourinho mistake that is up there with letting Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku leave Chelsea while he was in charge.
Ever since his goal against Liverpool on his debut, the young Frenchman has proven that he has the ability to get fans off their seats at Old Trafford but he is clearly not in Mourinho’s first team plans.
The Portuguese manager limited Martial to just 18 league starts last season and whilst this may be a deal that the players are in favour of, United would be making a huge mistake to let Martial go.
