Everton boss David Moyes is in ‘pole position’ to replace Sir Alex Ferguson next season, according to sources within United.
The 50-year-old Glaswegian was mentioned by Ferguson as a major candidate to succeed him when he spoke about the contenders in January.
Moyes, who is now back as the bookmakers’ favourite for the job, will be out of contract at Everton this summer and looks increasingly likely to end his 11-year association with the club.
United club sources are suggesting that the next Old Trafford boss will be announced “soon”, and “he’ll be cut from same cloth as Ferguson and [Sir Matt] Busby, and believe in youth development”.
Moyes fits that description best of the leading candidates and the feeling within football is that he deserves a chance at a “big” club capable of contending for the biggest silverware on offer.
Some sources suggest an announcement could be made within the next 24 hours and with United’s share price on the New York Stock Exchange vulnerable to a drift in an information vacuum, the news looks set to emerge sooner rather than later.
