Last night, Manchester United overcame Leicester City to get their Premier League campaign off to a winning start.

What’s the story?

Paul Pogba got the Red Devils off to a flying start by burying an early penalty. The Frenchman was also his side’s captain at Old Trafford last night, and lead by example on the pitch.

However, in the days prior to kick off, Pogba was apparently the subject of a late bid from Barcelona, as reported by The Sun.

United resisted the offer from the Blaugrana, but with the Spanish transfer window still open, there may still be more work yet to be done to ward off potential suitors for the World Cup winner.

Jose Mourinho must hold fast to keep his midfield talisman, and proof of Pogba’s importance to this United team was in evidence last night.

Midfield lynchpin

Pogba is a player with the capacity to transform the fortunes of this United side. Mourinho will know that his best midfield set up must be built around Pogba’s talent and constructed so as to get the best out of the 25-year-old.

Pogba struggled for consistency in the Premier League last time out, but was still able to return perfectly respectable figures of 6 goals and 10 assists from 27 top flight appearances. One year on in his development though, and with the confidence boost that his summer exploits will give him taken into account, many are expecting a big leap forward from Pogba this season.

Having invested so much into Pogba’s development, United can’t afford to let him leave the club on the verge of it all bearing fruit. They must remain resilient in the face of rivals’ interest and do what it takes to keep Pogba in Manchester for the foreseeable future.
