He failed to kick on while on loan with Borussia Dortmund last season and spent it largely on the periphery of the Red Devils’ first-team, despite the team’s struggles.

With Mourinho having brought in the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, he will surely find playing time increasingly limited.

To that end, he has reportedly asked the Portuguese tactician to sell him this summer as he believes his footballing future lies elsewhere.

He is understood to have been told he could leave on loan, but is said to rather starting afresh somewhere other than the Theatre of Dreams after a miserable few years.
