Phil Jones is looking to stay injury-free in pre-season so he can be ‘fitter and stronger’ for Manchester United next term.
The versatile England international defender is due to extend his playing season by featuring in the international friendlies against the Republic of Ireland on Wednesday and Brazil next Sunday.
Jones will then take a break before returning to pre-season training under the leadership of new boss David Moyes determined to be firing on all cylinders for the start of the new Premier League campaign in August.
Jones was blighted by injury issues at the start of this last campaign but forced his way into Sir Alex Ferguson’s plans on a regular basis by the time the title-winning season finished last weekend.
As a result the former Blackburn starlet is aiming to go into the new season on the back of a successful summer which includes United’s July tour of Thailand, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong.
He told Inside United: “I think I’ve only had one pre-season and that was in my first season here so it’s important I get a full pre-season under my belt.
“I need to get fitter and stronger and mentally prepare myself for what will be another tough season again.”
