QPR vs Manchester United: Twitter reacts to defender’s absence

In arguably the pick of the Premier League’s 3pm kick-offs this afternoon,¬†Queens Park Rangers play hosts to 13-time PL title winners¬†Manchester United at Loftus Road.

The starting line-ups were confirmed at 2pm and are as follows. Man United: De Gea, Jones, Evans, Rojo, Valencia, Carrick, Mata, Blind, Rooney, Di Maria, Falcao. QPR: Green, Isla, Dunne, Onuoha, Vargas, Barton, Henry, Fer, Zamora, Austin.

Yet, the exclusion of one player has caused quite a storm on Twitter over the last hour or so. No, not Manchester United’s Chris Smalling, who was in the original team sheet but later revealed to be on the bench – that’s gone down relatively well with the travelling support.

Rather, the absence of QPR centre-back Steven Caulker. Despite Rangers currently boasting the worst defensive record in the league, the occasional England international’s performances have often exceeded those of his team-mates. A mistake last week against Burnley appears to have cost him a slot in the starting Xi, instead finding himself dropped to the bench, much to the dismay of the west London outfit’s avid Tweeters.
