There are still question marks over the style of Manchester United's play under Jose Mourinho but there is no doubt that there is a greater emphasis on defence under the former Real Madrid boss.

United are not a fluent team by any stretch of the imagination but they are defensively resolute and combative under Mourinho.

Football FanCast wanted to take a look at the numbers to see whether that is reflected in their tackling statistics and if so, who the most prolific tacklers at Old Trafford are.

The stats show that United's players actually make a surprisingly low number of tackles, despite their strong overall defensive record in the league.

It looks as if it is more a case that their strong defensive shape and conservative approach to ball possession are greater factors than individual tackling.

Pogba's defensive discipline has been called into question on more than one occasion this season and it is clear now that he cannot play in a midfield duo.

He does try and do everything himself a lot of the time, and that would appear to include tackling as well, as he takes up his place on this list.

He is hardly a midfield enforcer like N'Golo Kante but he does have it in his locker to do most things on a football pitch and Mourinho will no doubt be impressed that tackling is among them.

Two contrasting players are joint fourth on this list. Herrera became popular with Mourinho last season for his willingness to press, harry and tackle all over the pitch and while his form has dropped off this season, he is still among the top performers in that respect.

Smalling tends to try and embroil strikers in a physical battle - although he is sometimes overpowered - which means that he is not shy about a challenge.

He is the only United centre-half on this list, which is perhaps a testament to how deep they defend and how the team is set up to ensure they aren't called into action particularly often.

Valencia - who has 92 caps for Ecuador - has captained United for much of the season in the absence of Michael Carrick.

Judging from his tackling stats, he has tried his best to lead by example. He often has Juan Mata ahead of him and the Spaniard's tendency to cut inside sometimes leaves Valencia exposed and needing to put his foot in.

He is a strong player, who can match any winger in the league physically, and is never one to shirk a challenge.

Valued at £4.5m by Transfermarkt, Young has been Mourinho's first-choice left-back for much of the season.

United are not short on options there but makeshift full-back Young frequently gets the nod due to his diligence and willingness to make a challenge.

That was never clearer than when the former Aston Villa winger shackled Liverpool hotshot Mo Salah in the north-west derby victory that tightened United's grip on 2nd place.

Matic has been United's sole holding midfielder for much of the season and has also been a virtual ever-present so it is little surprise to find him at the top of this list.

He was brought in from Chelsea to add steel to the United midfield - the absence of Michael Carrick means that they would have been lacking a proper holding midfielder otherwise and he has enjoyed an impressive first season.

Still, 38 tackles seems a low total for a player in his position and eyebrows might be raised that he isn't putting his foot in a little more often.
