The announcement of Nemanja Vidic’s move to Inter Milan on a free transfer this summer has sparked discussion about who Manchester United will bring in to replace the Serbian.
The club have had their fair share of critics on this matter, having failed to tie down the centre-back when he clearly still had a lot to offer. In addition to that, his stay would have given United one less thing to worry about in the market this summer.
But alongside Rio Ferdinand’s replacement, United will need to seek out a defender who offers an upgrade over both Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, neither of whom have been able to cement a place in the centre-back position, either through injury or poor form.
With Louis van Gaal set to arrive as manager this summer and armed with a sizeable financial backing in the market, these are the six players United should consider for Vidic’s replacement.
