According to The Sun, Manchester United are keen on a move for £40m-rated Lyon striker Moussa Dembele, plunging Romelu Lukaku's future at the club further into doubt.

What's the word, then?

Well, the Red Devils have the French forward in their sights after he hit 22 goals and recorded six assists in the campaign just gone.

Dembele, formerly of Celtic, has caught Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's eye as he is a young player with plenty of potential still yet to be fulfilled, a profile which the Norwegian is keen to get more of through the door at Old Trafford as opposed to marquee names.

At just 22, Dembele has hit 101 goals in just 218 appearances throughout his career, an impressive strike rate for someone of his age.

United would have to pay in the region of £40m for the Frenchman, however, given the fact he still has four years on his contract.

Lack of vision will cost United

It was reported over two years ago that the 20-time top-flight champions were interested in the same player, whilst he was scoring for fun under Brendan Rodgers at Celtic Park.

Dembele hit 32 goals in that 2016/17 season, so it was hardly like he was an unknown quantity - at the time, United could've got him for around £30m.

It is this lack of vision in the transfer market that has the Red Devils scrambling around for any old name nowadays, when an actual process of identification towards Dembele would've saved them a bit of cash; it also could have made the player easier to obtain given his enhanced reputation since then.

Solskjaer's clear plan to sign lesser-known names and develop them is admirable and something that has been sorely missed at Old Trafford in previous years.

It is about time a measured vision was implemented into United's scouting, as this great example shows they would've saved some money had they thoroughly planned things out.
