Manchester United look set for a summer battle to keep hold of star goalkeeper David de Gea, with reports from The Mirror claiming that Real Madrid are stepping up their pursuit of the in-form player.
The Spanish stopper has been, arguably, the Red Devils’ top performer this season, with his heroic showing between the sticks enough to outshine captain Wayne Rooney and summer record buy, Angel di Maria.
His showings have alerted Real, who see the 24-year-old as the ideal long-term replacement for Iker Casillas, whose form his nosedived over the past couple of years.
And with Victor Valdes having completed a free transfer to Old Trafford in the past few days, the European champions have pushed ahead with their plans to land the ‘keeper.
It’s understood that De Gea’s representatives have been contacted by Real, who are willing to spend as much as £30m to land his signature.
The player himself is now in the final 18 months of his contract, although Louis van Gaal is confident of tying him down to a new deal.
