But the attacking midfielder is widely expected to leave Old Trafford this summer following the appointment of Jose Mourinho, who sold him to United whilst in charge at Stamford Bridge.

In recent weeks, Mata has been consistently linked with Everton – a summer switch that would see the 28-year-old reunited with former Valencia gaffer Ronald Koeman.

That would undoubtedly be a real coup for the Toffees, considering Mata’s CV includes a Copa del Rey, an FA Cup, a Champions League title, a World Cup and a European Championship.

But according to Super Deporte, the Merseyside outfit now face competition for the midfield maestro’s signature from La Liga outfit Villarreal.

A fantastic 2015/16 campaign saw the Yellow Submarines finish fourth in La Liga and reach the semi-finals of the Europa League – where they were eliminated by Liverpool.
