Manchester United are up against Man City, Chelsea and Bayern Munich in the race to sign £4million-rated teenager Bruma from Sporting.
The Portuguese media is full of speculation over Sir Alex Ferguson’s interest in the Guinea-Bissau-born forward today after reports emerged that he was top of the United wanted list.
Bruma burst onto the scene last season playing for Sporting’s youth side in the Next Gen series, where he outshone Raheem Sterling as the Lions beat Liverpool 5-1 in Portugal.
He helped the Sporting Under-19 side reach the semi-finals of this season’s tournament before stepping up to the senior side and scoring a sensational goal against Gil Vicente.
Scouts have been flocking to the Alvalade Stadium in Lisbon to catch his recent performances with representatives from United, City and Chelsea all present last weekend for the derby against Benfica.
Bruma impressed in the first 25 minutes of the match before he and his side faded, but United are keen to steal a march on their Premier League rivals despite having already snapped up Wilfried Zaha from Crystal Palace – who plays in the same right-wing role.
The Reds have great contacts in Portugal, and particularly at Sporting where they signed Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani from early in their careers.
Chelsea, however, could become big rivals for the 18-year-old’s signature if they re-appoint Jose Mourinho as manager for next season.
