Seven games into his Manchester United career, Jose Mourinho is still struggling to get the best out of Alexis Sanchez. The January signing's only goals and assists have come against the most modest opposition the Red Devils have faced during that time, a goal and an assist in two games against Huddersfield following a setup in the routine FA Cup win over Yeovil.

On the most part, Mourinho has fielded Sanchez as a left winger thus far, although he took up the opposite flank against Manchester United last weekend. But the Chile international just hasn't impacted in that role, and it appears to have affected the balance of the starting XI at times with Pogba's position changing almost on a weekly basis and the Old Trafford gaffer switching between 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3.

And amid all this, Mourinho appears to have forgotten how versatile Sanchez is, capable of playing anywhere across the forward line. So, would United get more out of Sanchez in a different position? Football FanCast lay out for suggested solutions that could finally see the ex-Arsenal attacker flourish in a United jersey...

Solution A - Left Wing

It's the position where Sanchez did most of his damage for Arsenal, allowing him to cut inside on his right foot and drift into more central roles. But the South American just isn't allowed the same freedom under Mourinho's far more functional philosophy and perhaps not as quick as he was at the age of 29, he's often ended up pinned back in his own half, receiving the ball in deep positions.

Likewise, playing him there has limited the game-time of United's two most exciting young talents - Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford - who most Red Devils supporters are desperate to see starting each week.

Solution B - Right Wing

It might limit Sanchez's scoring potential compared to a left berth that puts him on his favoured right foot in shooting positions and it's rather telling that Arsene Wenger only ever fielded him there on 25 occasions. But the 119-cap international's returns during those games were deadly - ten goals and eight assists - and perhaps Sanchez should be playing a more supportive role in United's attack anyway, providing a supply line to Romelu Lukaku. He's certainly got the dribbling ability, dynamism and quality to wriggle down the touchline and whip in crosses for United's physically imposing centre-forward.

The right wing slot would also free up some more room for Pogba on the left - he loves to gallop into the left channel from midfield, but the Frenchman and Sanchez have been getting in each other's way when both have been deployed on the same flank.

Solution C - No.10

It's not a role we naturally associate with Sanchez but could be one that far prolongs his career at top level with lesser emphasis on the penetrative speed that will inevitably start to escape the forward as he approaches his 30s.

The Chilean certainly has the mixture of vision, delicate dribbling, passing quality and netting prowess from long range to be effective in that role, especially if he's playing just behind a physical presence like Lukaku who can use his powerful frame to occupy defenders and get Sanchez on the ball around the penalty area. The former Gunners star hasn't played there much throughout his career though, so there could be something of a learning curve that sees his form regress further before it improves.

Solution D - Striker

Some of Sanchez's best performances for Arsenal were as a centre-forward, bagging 21 goals and 12 assists in his 37 outings there for the Gunners. Sanchez - who Transfermarkt value at £63million - struggled at the tip of the attack upon first arriving in England but gradually improved with his back to goal during his time at the Emirates and last season particularly was amongst the most effective strikers in the Premier League.

It would ease the defensive burdens that have seen Sanchez struggle out wide and give United a different kind of outlet on the break, but the obvious downside is that Lukaku would have to come out of the team as a consequence.

That may not bother all United supporters, who appear to have mixed feelings about the summer signing, but Mourinho is clearly a big fan of what the Belgian brings to the team.
