The transfer window is chaotic at the best of times, especially in the closing hours as teams frantically rush to complete deals that could make or break their season.
It also throws up some comedic and farcical situations, from the antics of Jim White and his catchphrases or doing an ‘Odemwingie’ – i.e. being so desperate for a move that you drive yourself to a proposed club to only be told they don’t wish to sign you anymore. Last night’s strange scenario came from Spain where Ander Herrera was the subject of a desperate last minute bid from Manchester United – who met their buyout clause for the 24-year-old midfielder.
All present and correct – or so you may think. However, in Spain one of the terms of accepting a bid which activates a clause requires representatives of a club to turn up in person. Now there were discussions yesterday at Athletic Bilbao’s headquarters with people claiming to be representatives of Manchester United. But, as the conversation progressed it became apparent that they were actually imposters!
A complete waste of time for both clubs ensued on a night where a deadline had to be met. You have to see the funny side in the prank and it’s pretty clear that more details will emerge in the next few days. Nevertheless, it’s a huge embarrassment for both teams which resulted in the deal collapsing. Both cited ‘bureaucratic problems’. Well, that’s one way of putting it….
