According to The Telegraph, former Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may be the shock name in line to take the reigns at Old Trafford on a temporary basis until the end of the season, whilst those higher up attempt to find a long-term successor to Jose Mourinho. If the Norwegian does return to Manchester, there are a few players who will benefit from his management style.

What will Solskjaer do differently to Mourinho?

First and foremost, the former Cardiff manager has, especially in recent times, adopted a recognised and consistent 4-3-3 formation whilst with his current side Molde and to some effect. Whereas Mourinho appeared to just be sending his team out with no clear instruction or formation, with his players all over the place at times, Solskjaer is at least consistent in his plans.

You may argue that the Eliteserien - the top-flight in Norway - is not comparable to that of the Premier League, but his achievements there are impressive and he could easily give this United team, who are on their knees, a much needed lift - it should be noted that he led his Molde side to the top of their Europa League group in 2015 ahead of Ajax, Fenerbahce and Celtic.

A 4-3-3 system would allow Paul Pogba and Juan Mata to enter the fold once again and play to their full potential, whilst Anthony Martial would benefit greatly from a consistent run out on the left-wing under a manager who won't demand too much of him defensively - however, one player would benefit more than most...

Learning from a great

A temporary stint in the Old Trafford dugout for a United goalscoring legend may be just what Romelu Lukaku needs to become an elite striker in Manchester.

You could argue that Solskjaer's record at Cardiff was woeful, as he oversaw a swift return to the Championship with no real fighting display on show, but his return to Molde has seen his side record some impressive stats.

The 45-year-old's team have scored 63 goals in 30 league games in the season just gone, as the Norwegian League finished at the end of November, and 17 in their eight Europa League games. Most impressively, however, is the manager's effect on 18-year-old striking sensation Erling Braut Håland.

The 18-year-old scored 16 goals in the aforementioned season , including four in five games in Europe, and his boss' past successes as a predatory poacher are undoubtedly a huge factor in his influential schooling under Solskjaer.

If Solskjaer can do this with a teenager, then surely he must be able to coax some goals out of misfiring forward Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian international has just six goals this season and has been a source of ridicule for most people thanks to his abhorrent first touch, squandered opportunities and causing his own side's attacks to break down.

Solskjaer managed to score a phenomenal 126 goals in 366 games for the Red Devils over the course of a ten-year period - even if he is only at Old Trafford until the end of the season, if he can teach the 25-year-old about clever movement in the box and how to get in the right areas given how good he was at it, then it would be a move worth making for Manchester United.
