December has arrived, and although many are thinking about Christmas and getting together presents for loved ones, we here at FFC Towers are only interested in the January transfer window.
Love or loathe the first month of the year, the rumours and hear-say are certainly exciting, with optimism always in the air amid links with the perfect striker, a top creative midfielder or even a goalkeeper or defender to prevent the goals against tally getting much worse!
As always, Manchester United are one of the clubs getting lots of attention approaching January, with a number of players being, reportedly at least, ‘lined up’. We looked through some of the best rumours and put them to United fans, who have voted for the players they want.
The results are in, and here are the FIVE the Old Trafford faithful are calling for…
In at number five is a former Chelsea man in the shape of Robben. It’s somewhat forgotten that the Dutchman spent some of the early years of his career in west London so that aspect may fly under the radar with some fans, while his relationship with Louis van Gaal, whom he worked with in the Netherlands set-up, could be beneficial.
Robben would certainly add the pace and creativity LVG has admitted his side miss. If this is the quality of the fifth place, imagine how good four, three, two and ONE will be…
Classy on the ball, physically imposing and quick across the turf, Stones isn’t dissimilar to a young Rio Ferdinand.
As we all know Chelsea openly chased the England international through the summer before failing to convince the Toffees to sell, so even if United step up their rumoured interest in him, there are no guarantees either in January or next summer.
Still, imagine Stones and Smalling at the back. Dream combo.
It’s somewhat surprising to see the Southampton man, who was the subject of a bid from Old Trafford over the summer, so far up this list, and we put his lofty third position down to his pace and direct running.
The Senegalese star offers the sort of threat few in the current United squad pose, and could potentially transform a dull attack into one with more menace.
Is it the summer of 2014 again? The German World Cup-winning centre-back was linked with United on a daily basis through Louis van Gaal’s first window at Old Trafford, and once again the rumours are swirling around with Dortmund out of the Champions League.
Arguably the best ball-playing defender on the planet, Hummels could offer the classy presence the club have missed at the back and help to nurture the ever-improving Chris Smalling.
Not Cristiano Ronaldo, nor Gareth Bale, United fans want Rodriguez from Real Madrid. The Colombian topped our poll thanks to his creativity on the ball, positional awareness and regular moments of spectacular goalscoring magic.
Although a somewhat unlikely move for January, United have the cash to pay for the South American and boast the sort of appeal to attract top class players, so fans’ wishes could come true.
Before you go, our poll consisted of 10 options, and the next slide reveals numbers six downwards…
6) Ricardo Rodriguez – A classy left-back, who could cover for the injured Luke Shaw.
7) Jamie Vardy – Not even 11 goals in 11 games has been enough to sufficiently impress United fans.
8) Lucas Biglia – A decent creative midfielder, but not strictly needed with Ander Herrera around.
9) Mario Gomez – A Louis van Gaal favourite, but a bit past it now.
10) Saido Berahino – Let’s hope he doesn’t see this, or there may be a full on Twitter meltdown from the West Brom man.
