Manchester United go into the weekend knowing a loss to Chelsea could see them drop down to fourth, but a win over the Blues would tighten their grip on a second place finish.

United have struggled for form of late, having started 2018 with only three league wins, and suddenly find themselves in real danger of falling out of the Champions League spots.

Much of the focus has been on Jose Mourinho and his relationship with Paul Pogba, or lack thereof. The French midfielder was withdrawn in the loss at Spurs and has been in and out of the team since. Pogba was benched again at Sevilla on Wednesday night, but replaced Ander Herrera in the first half because of an injury to the Spaniard.

Pogba will surely keep his place against Chelsea on Sunday, but where the Frenchman plays and in what system is once again anyone’s guess. One thing is for sure - Mourinho desperately needs three points to get the fans off his back and the team playing with some confidence again. So how can he do it? We look at the tweaks the Portuguese must make for this weekend's heavyweight clash.

Get Alexis Sanchez more involved, and in better positions

It would not be an exaggeration to say Sanchez was awful in Sevilla on Wednesday. The Chilean was tasked with a lot of defensive work and was practically invisible in the second half. Mourinho must get Sanchez more involved in the attacking play. Far too often the feisty winger is seen picking up the ball around the half way line with his heels hugging the touchline. Whether it be as a number ten, a second striker or as a winger, Mourinho has to figure out a way to get the January signing sniffing around the goal and creating chances for his teammates.

Let Paul Pogba have fun again

The Pogba conversation is getting a bit tiresome now. Is he better in a midfield three? Can he play in a midfield two? Why not try him as a number ten? Whatever decision Mourinho takes, what really matters is that Pogba has the freedom to have some fun. Every time Pogba has looked like he’s having fun this season, United have played good football and scored goals. When the Frenchman looks laboured and bored, the passing is slow and cautious. Whether it’s an issue of fitness, motivation or tactics, Mourinho has to get Pogba enjoying his football.

If United can get their two world-class players to affect the game in the right areas of the pitch, they should have enough to overpower Chelsea at Old Trafford.
