Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford received a red card during the Red Devils’ otherwise comfortable 2-0 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday. The England international was given his marching orders by referee Jonathan Moss after leaning into Burnley’s Phil Bardsley with his head.

The incident marked the first sending off of the 20-year-old’s career, and he will now face a suspension for the next three games. 

Despite lacking sufficient force to actually cause any harm, Rashford’s actions are considered ‘violent conduct’ by the letter of the law, meaning a red card was always likely. The attacker’s behaviour was undoubtedly naive, and for a player out of the starting XI already it could represent a real setback for him this season, especially if Anthony Martial is able to step up in his place.
