Three Manchester United players that must leave the club in January

As Premier League starts go, it’s been pretty decent for Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United.

Three wins from three going into one of the most eagerly awaited Manchester derbies we’ve ever seen has seriously whetted the appetite for success at Old Trafford but for some, it’s not all happiness and smiles.

Whilst there is always a starting eleven of happy players that are doing everything to help the team win, there are players who can’t make the first-team. Whether it’s down to form, injuries or managerial selection, its tough to contribute to the team when you’re not playing well.

And at Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in the world, there are always going to be good players on the fringes of the squad. But with the summer transfer window now been and gone, the next chance to move on is in January.

And here at Football Fancast, we think there are a few players that might be eagerly awaiting the winter transfer window to roll around.

So with that in mind, Hayden Atkins takes us through three Manchester United players that must leave the club in January…

Ashley Young

Top of our list is Ashley Young, who seriously needs a move away from Old Trafford to restart his career. Since a £15million move to Old Trafford in June 2011, he’s made just over 140 appearances.

That translates to just over twenty games a season, which, for a player who was tipped to be a future England superstar, just isn’t enough. Form, injuries and lack of faith from managers has resulted in the former Watford man being consigned to the bench whilst an increasing number of youngsters come through and take his place.

He doesn’t bestow confidence any more and can he lead United to titles and European Cups? Probably not, no.

James Wilson

20-year-old striker James Wilson seems to have been around for a long time but he’s still yet to really break into the United first team. He’s now serving his second loan spell, this time with Derby County and whilst he’ll be trying to prove to the United hierarchy he’s good enough to be a part of the first team set-up, it might be a little too late.

The competition at Old Trafford is hotter than ever and we just can’t see Wilson starting ahead of the likes of Ibrahimovic, Rooney and Rashford. He’s on-loan with Derby for the season but we think he should be looking for a move as early as January.

Memphis Depay

When it comes to money poorly spent, there isn’t a single player at United that has under-performed quite like Memphis Depay. The former PSV Eindhoven man came with a big £30million pricetag and real feeling that he could shine at Old Trafford.

But in reality, he’s been a complete and utter letdown. He’s a player who seems quite intent on posting his fleet of luxury super cars on social media, rather than working hard to try and break into the first-team.

When you have players like Marcus Rashford who are full of endeavour, hard-work and goals, players like Depay have absolutely no chance of getting into the starting lineup. Whilst he should look for a move in January, he seems like the type of footballer who is content to play in the reserves, as long as his earnings remain substantial.
