Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal has achieved his principle aim of returning the club to the top four positions in the Premier League.

It is widely expected though, that in order to get closer to Champions Chelsea next term and compete in Europe, substantial investment in the squad will be made.

The Red Devils currently have a sizeable list of playing staff including those who have spent the season on loan elsewhere.

With the Dutch coach already having secured the first of what could be many big-money purchases in Memphis Depay, the time may have come for some of United’s younger fringe talents to try their luck elsewhere.

Here are three such players who probably need a move...

Jesse Lingard

Jesse Lingard

The 16th August 2014 could just be a day that haunts Jesse Lingard for the remainder of his career.

With United desperately short of players on the opening day of the season, Van Gaal, impressed by Lingard's pre-season form, opted to give the youngster a chance as an emergency wing-back.

Unfortunately for Lingard he had to leave the game early with a knee injury that cruelly ruined his debut.

The silver lining from the events at the start of the season for the 22-year-old was that the new United boss renewed his contract, offering him the chance to rehabilitate and try again.

The forward, who is comfortable in the hole or on the wing, then spent the campaign on loan at Derby.

He didn’t exactly set the Championship on fire though. After making his comeback in February, he was unable to ignite a fading Rams’ promotion push.

Clearly Van Gaal is a fan but the sheer volume of competition in the squad next season will make a breakthrough at United very difficult for the Cheshire-born man.

Nick Powell

Nick Powell

A few eyebrows were raised when United chose to sign Powell from Crewe Alexandra, then in League 2, three summers ago.

The youngster had been impressing at Gresty Road with a haul of goals from midfield that a young Paul Scholes would have been proud of.

The player was given a few chances to impress by Sir Alex Ferguson in his final season in charge, with outings in the League, League Cup and even the Champions League.

Both David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal though, have chosen to loan out the England youth international and in the most recent campaign, the 21-year-old struggled to break into the side at Leicester City.

He will no doubt still hold aspirations of becoming a Premier League midfielder but to have any chance he needs to forget Old Trafford and the queue there for a starting spot.

He did impress at Wigan during the 2013-14 season and it seems that the Championship could well be his ideal level.

Will Keane

Will Keane

United fans have been excited about Will Keane for quite some time but now at the age of 22, the striker simply hasn’t scored enough goals at senior level to justify a place in Louis Van Gaal’s squad next season.

You also get the impression that there will be space for only one inexperienced forward among United’s striking options next term and that it will be James Wilson.

Keane has been unfortunate; after impressing in the Red Devils’ reserves he missed the entire 2012-13 season with an injury sustained representing England at youth level.

This setback, along with unsuccessful loan moves to Wigan and Q.P.R, have all but ended the forward’s chances of becoming an Old Trafford regular.

He has managed a few goals at Championship level this term with Sheffield Wednesday though. Like Powell, Keane may need to drop a division to secure permanent first team football.
