A calf injury has ruled Manchester United’s Tom Cleverley out of England’s two friendly internationals this week.
The highly-rated midfielder was called up by Three Lions coach Roy Hodgson to face the Republic of Ireland at Wembley on Wednesday and then Brazil in Rio next Sunday.
However, Cleverley has been forced to pull out as he has not yet recovered from the injury he picked up during the thrilling 5-5 draw at West Bromwich Albion on the final day of the Premier League campaign on May 19.
It means Hodgson will now be without three key midfielders for the games as Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard and Arsenal star Jack Wilshere are also missing.
Manchester City midfielder Jack Rodwell will come into the squad to replace Cleverley, with United’s Michael Carrick and Chelsea veteran Frank Lampard the other options in the middle.
