Wigan Athletic will target Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs as a potential managerial candidate if the club is forced to terminate current manager Malky Mackay’s contract.
Mackay is under investigation by the FA for allegedly sending racist, homophobic and sexist messages during his time at Cardiff City. If he is found guilty, the Latics may be obliged to fire the Scot, which could pave the way for Giggs to land his first job in football management.
The Welshman ended his remarkable 24-year playing career at Old Trafford in May and is currently assistant to Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal.
The 41 year-old is desperate to forge a career as a manager, and has hinted that he may have to leave Manchester United to get going.
“I’ve been at the club for so long that I’m familiar with the club.
“But if I want to further my coaching career or managing career, and if it’s not at Manchester United, then so be it. I’ll just have to wait and see.”
Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan also landed himself in hot water last week after he was charged by the FA for making offensive remarks as he sought to defend his appointment of Mackay.
