Manchester United fans were full of optimism when the club announced the £52m signing of Fred back in the summer (as reported by Sky Sports).
The Brazilian was supposed to help the Red Devils build on 2017/18’s second place finish in the Premier League. On first glance, his price tag reflected the trust Jose Mourinho had in the player but was there more to that transfer than initially met the eye?
Matty from The Magpie Channel has suggested that Mourinho signed Fred safe in the knowledge that should his new acquisition fail to deliver, at least it would offer the opportunity of a “nice pay out” if the club decided to part ways with his services.
Speculation aside, there’s no doubt that Fred has been a disappointment and 9 Premier League starts and 1 goal don’t exactly represent value for money.
