Wayne Rooney backs under-fire United star

David De Gea, Manchester UnitedManchester United’s Wayne Rooney has defended much-criticised goalkeeper David de Gea.

The stopper has come in for vast levels of criticism in recent weeks, with a series of errors costing the Red Devils potentially vital points in the battle for the Premier League title.

Ex-United man Gary Neville openly questioned the Spaniard’s abilities following Tottenham’s late equaliser in the clubs’ recent clash, becoming the latest in a long line of pundits to do so.

But, de Gea’s team-mate Rooney defended him after their 1-0 win over Fulham, insisting that the whole squad are firmly behind the goalkeeper:

“David has made some great saves over the last few weeks,” he is quoted by the Daily Mail.

“I know he got a little bit of criticism after the Tottenham game but it wasn’t the biggest mistake I’ve ever seen.

“We’re all behind him. He’s a great player for the future as well.”

Despite this, there are still doubts over the 22-year-old’s future at the club, with reports circulating that he may return to Spain.

United’s rumoured interest in Stoke’s Asmir Begovic may lead to a summer bid, whilst Liverpool number one Pepe Reina has also been linked with a switch to Old Trafford.

Both Real Madrid and Barcelona are believed to be monitoring the ex-Atletico Madrid man, and could swoop to secure his signature.
