Juan Mata says that he and his team-mates are working hard to ensure that David de Gea does not have to maintain his electric form to keep Manchester United in the hunt for a top four finish.
The Spanish goalie put in a Man of the Match display against Liverpool at Old Trafford yesterday, keeping a clean sheet against the Merseysiders – who had 19 shots on goal in total.
A fine one-on-one stop during a game-long due with Raheem Sterling was impressive, but the highlight came when he tipped a stinging Mario Balotelli effort from six yards onto his crossbar and out.
It was not De Gea’s first important showing of the term, with the stopper having been voted United’s Player of the Month for October and November.
Mata – who scored a somewhat controversial goal when in an offside position to make it 2-0 – says that he’s enjoying the form of his compatriot, but that he hopes to help ease the burden on him by improving the Red Devils’ play at the other end of the pitch:
“We won, among other things, thanks to the ‘Man of the Match’ David de Gea, who has had yet another great performance,” the midfielder wrote on his blog.
“He is in top form. Everybody’s praising him and now we have to keep working so we don’t need so many saves from him in the next few games; we have to get better in that regard.”
