The weekend’s victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium has set Manchester United up for a titanic battle with rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Pep Guardiola’s side have laboured to late victories in their last three games, and without John Stones and Benjamin Mendy, they’re undoubtedly a weaker side. That means United have every chance of becoming the first team to inflict victory on City so far this season.
And yet, despite all the hype that will surround the derby this weekend, there’s still a midweek to get through first: City are away in Ukraine to face Shakhtar Donetsk, but will be able to rest some key players, and the same is true for United, who are at home to CSKA Moscow.
The trouble is, United will need to rest strategically: Romelu Lukaku and Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be vying for a starting berth up front, whilst Mourinho will probably be forced to choose between one of Anthony Martial, valued at £31.5m by transfermarkt.com, or Marcus Rashford for the derby. Even if he plays both against City at the weekend, he may be able to rest only one in midweek.
So who should Mourinho prioritise for a rest against Moscow ahead of the Manchester derby? Have your say below….
