West Ham United captain Mark Noble has not had the greatest support from a lot of fans over the course of the season, but there were many well-wishes when it was announced that he will undergo abdominal surgery.
It has been a frustrating campaign for the Hammers as they failed to build on last season’s seventh-place finish in the Premier League.
At one point the East London outfit got dragged into a relegation battle, but a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur last week sealed their top-flight status.
Earlier in the campaign, Noble angered supporters by telling Sky Sports that the fans calling for him to be dropped do not understand that game.
It has now emerged that the midfielder has been playing through pain for some weeks after refusing to cut short his season, despite suffering with an abdominal injury.
West Ham’s head of medical and sports science Stijn Vandenbroucke told the club’s official website:
“Mark has been playing in pain, but he is the captain and he wanted to do everything he could to ensure the club retained its Premier League status. Mark is as brave as they come and he ignored the pain as best he could, but the Premier League takes it toll.”
Noble will now miss the final two games of the season against Liverpool and Burnley.
