Matthijs de Ligt will be a world-beater, but Tottenham won’t be able to sign him

Tottenham Hotspur have been told that Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt is not for sale, according to Football London.

What’s the story?

The 18-year-old centre-back has already established himself as one of the top young defenders in Europe and has already been capped seven times by the Netherlands.

The Ajax academy product is valued at £36million on Transfermarkt and has been linked with a move to Tottenham this summer but now the Dutch club’s director of football Marc Overmars has said the wonderkid is not for sale at any absurd amount.

Missed opportunity

With Toby Alderweireld likely to join Manchester United this summer, Spurs are right to be looking at a new centre-back and de Ligt looks the real deal.

He is widely touted as a future star and could form a rock at the heart of the Spurs defence for many years to come.

However, if Ajax aren’t willing to sell, there’s very little Tottenham can do about it and they will have to turn their attention elsewhere.

After Tottenham pinched Davinson Sanchez from Ajax last summer, it’s fair enough that they don’t want to sell another of their top young defenders to Mauricio Pochettino’s team.
