Newcastle and Tottenham keen on Swiss stopper

Yann Sommer (Basel)Newcastle and Tottenham are pondering moves for Basel goalkeeper Yann Sommer, according to reports from the Daily Star.

The Swiss international’s future has been thrown into doubt recently after he spurned the offer of a new contract.

As a result, he is believed to be available in January at a knockdown rate, with a £3.5m bid rumoured to be enough to convince Basel to sell.

This has alerted the Premier League duo, who have both been impressed by Sommer.

Spurs chief Andre Villas-Boas is thought to be a long-term admirer of the stopper, and sees him as the ideal man to replace veteran USA star Brad Friedel.

The experienced campaigner is now 42-years-old, and is unlikely to remain Hugo Lloris’ backup for much longer.

Sommer is seen as somebody who can provide the Frenchman with a greater challenge, and at 24 he is also a long-term investment.

Newcastle are also keen, as the club step up their transfer plans after a woeful summer in which Loic Remy was their only signing.

Speculation surrounding Tim Krul is also a factor, with the Magpies aware that a number of top European clubs are monitoring the Dutchman.
