Newcastle could face a battle with Watford and Middlesbrough in order to land Stade Rennais left-back Cheikh M’Bengue, according to French media outlet RMC Sport.
The 27-year old full-back has established himself as one of the most dependable operators in his position across Ligue 1 due to his solid outings for a number of seasons now.
However, his future in France is not clear as his contract is due to expire at the end of the season as clubs begin to circle.
Numerous teams from Germany and Turkey are understood to be keen on landing the Senegalese international, though Premier League duo Watford and Newcastle are among the most notable.
Reports suggest they are leaning towards bringing the player to England at the end of his deal in France on a free transfer next summer.
However, it is believed that Rennais are keen on capitalising on the player they signed from Toulouse in 2013 and receiving money for him while they still can.
The Toon Army are lacking in options on the left side of defence with only Paul Dummett and the inexperienced Kevin Mbabu available for selection at the present moment.
