Newcastle United gaffer raised a few eyebrows – well, more than he usually does with his touchline antics – when it was announced that the Magpies would be fielding Mehdi Abeid in their starting XI against Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool side.
Abeid, a 22-year-old midfielder who joined the Geordie outfit in 2011, will be making his Premier League debut in the middle of the park and, to add to the occasion, the game is live on BT Sport. No pressure, mate.
The Frenchman impressed in midweek as Pardew’s side caused an upset in the Capital One Cup with a well-deserved 2-0 win over holders Manchester City.
Will the surprise inclusion sink or swim? Well, let’s ask Twitter to see what people are saying on social media.
Big opportunity for Mehdi Abeid today, really hope he takes it.

So pleased Abeid in the starting XI, outstanding on Wednesday and has been so patient #nufc

Nice to see Pardew rewarding players for good displays – can't argue with Abeid's start after Wed or Ameobi's after last two games. #NUFC

Can't complain too much about that line up. Abeid should be on set pieces, strong bench #nufc
