Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley is on the verge of selling the club after a £300m bid was tabled, according to BBC Sport.

The businessman made it clear earlier in the season that he was ready to sells his shares in the club that he has owned for 10 years.

The Sports Direct tycoon has been a divisive figure at the North-East outfit, with many fans regularly criticising his transfer strategy and managerial appointments over the years.

BBC Sport claims that Amanda Staveley, who fronts PCP Capital Partners, has offered £300m to buy the club.

The British businesswoman is known for her work with Middle Eastern investors, and played a hand in Sheikh Mansour's purchase of Manchester City in 2009.

If a sale is agreed, the takeover would not be finalised until it received Premier League approval, which takes 30 days.

As expected, Newcastle fans have been expressing their thoughts on the latest development via Twitter.
